The Board of Directors of Dubai National Theatre seeks to enhance the position of theatre as a fundamental pillar of Emirati culture and a vital space for creativity, by leveraging the expertise of pioneers, supporting young talents, and embracing creators, to establish the United Arab Emirates’ position as a regional hub for culture and the arts.
Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai – may God protect him – in achieving comprehensive and sustainable development for the Emirate of Dubai, embodied in the vision and mission of Dubai Community Development Authority, the mission of Dubai National Theatre comes to enhance quality of life and encourage the community to engage with various cultural and artistic activities. Theatre is a fundamental element in community development, a platform for social critique, and an influential force in the lives of individuals at all levels.
In 1976, as part of the cultural activities of the Dubai Folk Arts Society, the theatre troupe was established under the name (Dubai Popular Theatre), to become a pioneering platform for the theatrical movement in the United Arab Emirates. During this period, the troupe presented a series of theatrical productions, most notably (the Bumahyous plays) and numerous cultural and artistic activities. In 2005, the theatre troupe became independent with a new registration under the name (Dubai National Theatre) to continue its national and cultural journey, actively contributing to enriching the cultural and creative scene in the Emirates, the Gulf region, and the Arab world.
Dubai National Theatre believes that theatre is not merely a performing art, but a tool for expression and human development. Hence its mission to support young Emirati talents and enable them to express their ideas and feelings on stage, reflecting the nation’s cultural identity and strengthening its position as a nurturing ground for the arts.
The theatre aspires to be a beacon of theatrical creativity in the region and a cultural center that brings together creators from around the world, forming together a human and artistic fabric that expresses the values of tolerance and diversity that distinguish Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.
This vision is embodied in the projects and programs organized by the theatre throughout the year, which aim to develop creative capabilities and present artistic content that keeps pace with the spirit of the times while preserving authenticity and roots.
Today, after more than four decades of dedication, Dubai National Theatre has become one of the most important pillars of the cultural movement in the United Arab Emirates.
